I’m a doer who expects results! I don’t like wasting my energy on nonproductive endeavors. I’m not satisfied going through fruitless antics; spinning my wheels just to say I’m doing something. Since I’m outcome driven, I admire people who get things done. I’m especially impressed by people who confidently know the Bible from cover-to-cover; with the evidence of a powerful prayer life—followed by results, of course.
But yesterday when I prayed, it felt like my prayers were inadequate compared to those Bible scholars. “Are my prayers shallow? Is my faith producing enough power?” After questioning my spirituality, God put this in my heart:
“Would you hold an infant accountable for what a twelve year old would know?”
God told me not to compare my prayer life or my biblical understanding with those who happen to be more advanced in their walk with Him. All He wants me to do is keep learning and growing spiritually. He placed those scholars in my life for me to learn from—not to compare myself with. In like manner, He has placed me in a position to help others. We are all learners and teachers.
Earth is God’s giant classroom set up for us to learn from one another.
In Philippians 3:17, Paul spoke about forerunners. Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. (NIV)
Let the competitions begin!
However, the devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy. (John 10:10) He wants believers to compare themselves with each other hoping they’ll start competing. Therefore, instead of them benefiting from the knowledge others have to offer, their hearts will be filled with envy, resentment, and strife.
Aren’t you glad the Holy Spirit sees us as individuals? He knows when we are doing our best. We don’t have to have earth-shaking faith; God will honor the amount we have as long as we continue to mature in Him.
I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfill His purpose—I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.] (Philippians 4:13 AMP)
