Staunch believers know to abide under the shadow of the Almighty; when His shadow moves, they move; when His shadow stops, they stop and remain under His sovereignty. But why do they trail the Shadow so closely? They follow God for various reasons; however, one is found in the beginning verses of Psalm 91.
The secret place!
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
We are comforted by the divine protections in Psalm 91. But unfortunately, many overlook those blessings are contingent upon fulfilling the conditions of the first two verses. Although satisfying the psalm’s terms doesn’t mean we’ll be free from tribulations because troubling woes (like it or not) help grow our faith and mature us spiritually.
Nevertheless, when we adhere to those stipulations, we have an advantage over nonbelievers; we have God’s grace and mercy to guide and carry us through the persecutions we encounter. So, let’s take a closer look at those vital passages.
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Colloquially, dwelling in the secret place means hanging out with God. To dwell doesn’t mean to make short-pop visits only in times of need. Instead, people who have a close intimate relationship with God meet with Him one-on-one, face-to-face throughout the day.
Dwellers are not visitors.
I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
Our dependency upon God defines the strength of our faith; we are sheltered by a power no one on earth or in hell can come against. When we hang out with God, we get to know Him, and experiential revelation of His faithfulness brings unconditional love and trust; we aim to please Him in all our ways.
In closing:
Memorization doesn’t take the place of internalization.
Memorizing scriptures doesn’t mean you know them; you must digest them into your spirit and base your life upon them. If you need further enlightenment, ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom on making His Word applicable in your life. Then meditate on what He says until it internalizes in your being, no matter how long it takes—it’s worth the time to get it right.
Finally, remember to stay under the shadow of the Almighty 24/7; there’s no better place.
Psalm 91:
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
